Yankee baseball legend, Yogi Berra, played in 14 World Series, and his team won 10 of them. And Yogi was an All Star 18 times.
But Yogi was just as famous for dozens of “Yogi-isms”: memorable turns of phrases that seemed to lack logic but often expressed profound truths. Here are some “Yogi-isms”:
- “When you come to a fork in the road, take it.”
- “You can observe a lot by just watching.”
- “A nickel ain’t worth a dime anymore.”
Here’s another Yogism: “Little things are big!” This Yogism has huge spiritual implications!
Some of the “little things” in your own life indeed are “BIG”! Things like a beautiful sunset, your child’s smile, your spouse’s kiss, a cup of coffee with a friend, etc.
But what about those “little things” that you keep hearing from God during your prayer times?
- God’s prompt to get up earlier?
- God’s prompt to exercise?
- God’s prompt to mend a relationship?
- Something else?
Each of these repeated prompts from God might seem small. But obeying them can have huge impact, like a tropical wind transforming tiny ripples into a surfer’s paradise.
I am a night person, so I hate getting up early.
But God had been prompting me for months – MONTHS! – to do just that. I didn’t understand why I needed to get up earlier. What difference did it make if I got up late and went to bed late, as opposed to going to bed early and getting up early? It’s the same number of hours in the day, right?
But when our church asked us to identify and pray against strongholds in our lives, I absolutely knew that my personal stronghold was getting up too late.
So I shared that with my small group, started getting up early, and sent weekly updates to a friend for accountability.
Immediately, I started seeing amazing breakthroughs.
A friend that needed my help, in the very early morning hours, stretched my serving muscle. A new book that I would not have read at night took my coaching ministry to the next level.
And most significantly, almost five years ago, I was hospitalized with classic heart attack and stroke symptoms.
Even though all medical tests were clear, I have struggled with low energy levels ever since, to the point of resigning my church staff position.
However, after three weeks of obeying God by getting up earlier and going to bed earlier, my energy levels have returned almost to previous levels!
“Little things are big!” This is especially true about obeying God’s still, small voice.
In the Bible, Jezebel, the king’s wife, wanted to kill Elijah. Elijah, nervous and fed up, fled into the wilderness. He complained that he was the only person still loyal to the Lord God, and yet here he was in fear of his life.
Then 1 Kings 19:11-12 says: Behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire a still small voice.
“A still small voice.”
God’s voice! Obeying His prompting to do that one seemingly insignificant “little thing,” opens floodgates of blessing, growth, and direction.
You might be praying for God to give you His exciting Big Plan … You want to see the mighty wind and the great earthquake! But you might not realize that doing God’s one next “little thing” will enable you to fulfill His Big Plan.
God doesn’t withhold His Big Plan in order to punish you. But He knows which of the “little things” will give you what’s needed to do the Big Plan. And until you do the little thing, you are unable to do the Big Plan!
What “one little thing” have you been hearing, over and over, that God wants you to do?
Will you commit to do it, even if you don’t understand why? Studies have shown that sending regular updates to a friend for accountability, will triple your success rate of sticking with it. To whom will you be accountable?

For me, it is my one cup of coffee each morning!
“Seriously, one cup, God?”
“Yes.”
The big things I’ve given up at God’s prompting were easier because they simply made sense to me. When I heard this from God in 2008, I gave it up with ease and it made sense a few months later when I found myself in Mozambique where there simply was no access to a cup of coffee. Over the years, I gradually started having a cup each day, and now, I am hearing God again prompting me to give up this little pleasure~this habit.
Thank you for sharing “The Little Things”!
Thank you, Sue! I find bigger things easier to do in general too, because they usually do make more sense, and they’re exciting. But my own recent experience, with the “little thing” of getting up early, has also excited me, because I want to look for additional goodies that I’ve been missing! Thank you, my friend!
