In the first frame of a cartoon by David Hayward, a young man is seen praying on his knees: “God, I vow never to get up until I hear your voice.” In the second frame, he’s much older, with a cane, but still kneeling in prayer. And in the final frame, he’s a stone-cold skeleton, but he’s still leaning on his cane in prayer! This young man had vowed to keep praying until he heard from God, and he kept his promise! Can you relate?! The whole concept of hearing God can sometimes seem like an exercise in futility!

But the good news is that God DOES indeed speak to us. Sometimes it helps to have a tool that helps us hear Him.

Every Christ follower does indeed hear from God.

Jesus said, “My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me.” (John 10:27)

The fact is that you probably do hear from God more than you realize. For example:

  • through a Bible verse that strikes you in a totally new way
  • through a repeated prompt in your heart or mind
  • in the words of a trusted friend or mentor
  • as you walk in the beauty of God’s creation

There is a simple tool that will help you to hear God daily.

“The Hearing God Tool” is called SOAP.
