Nick Vujicic was born with no arms or legs.

As a child, Nick learned how to stand up by banging his head against walls and inching himself up with his forehead. That definitely alarmed his parents, but it worked! His self-described “flipper” on his left hip substituted for both a foot and a hand. He learned to skateboard and swim, and eventually even to surf! And his gift of gab opened doors for genuine friendships.

Early in life, Nick’s faith sustained him.His parents were strong Christians, and his father was a lay pastor. In childhood, Nick was sure that God would perform a miracle, that Nick would wake up one morning with new limbs, and that God would then be glorified all over the world! But Nick’s prayers for limbs went unfulfilled, and God did not answer his desperate why-questions. Resentment and despair took hold in Nick’s heart.

When he hit adolescence, he fell into a dangerous depression. He thought, “No woman will marry a man who can’t even hug her. I can never be a father. No one will ever hire me. I will always be a burden. I’m an accident, a freak of nature. My life has no purpose.”

Twice, Nick contemplated suicide. One time, sitting on a high countertop while his mom cooked dinner, he wanted to dive off at just the right angle to break his neck. Another time, in the bathtub, he flipped over onto his stomach and wanted to drown. He told his brother that he planned to kill himself as soon as he turned 21.

But God did indeed perform a miracle in Nick’s life. Now, at age 33, Nick is a motivational speaker and author, and director of the nonprofit Christian organization Life Without Limbs. He has spoken to millions of people in 30 countries, and he has written 5 inspirational books.

Nick’s childhood dream, that God would use him to glorify Jesus, has come true!

Furthermore, Nick is now married, with two children!

In his book, Life Without Limits, Nick says, “I was never crippled until I lost hope.” He encourages everyone to “celebrate YOUniqueness!”“Love the perfectly imperfect YOU!” Nick discovered that he is not an accident, but that God has a purpose for him, as He does for everyone! Nick learned to believe it and boldly live it! As Nick says, “Attitude is altitude!”

Nick is a powerful inspiration for boldly stepping into YOUR God-given YOUniqueness! He says, “If God can use a man without arms and legs to be His hands and feet, then He will certainly use any willing heart!”

People now tell Nick, “Well, of course it’s easy for God to use you! Everyone flocks to hear a charismatic guy with no arms and legs!”

But it wasn’t always like that! Not when Nick was still discouraged and resentful! Nick is now fulfilling his divine calling because he learned to embrace the YOUnique person that God created him to be!

Psalm 139:13,18 says:
For it was you [God] who formed my inward parts;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
Your eyes beheld my unformed substance.
In your book were written
all the days that were formed for me,
when none of them as yet existed.

What about you?

  • What personal limitations stop YOU from fulfilling God’s calling on your life?
  • How does God want you to step boldly into your own created YOUniqueness?
  • Nick keeps a pair of shoes in his closet, because he believes in miracles! What impossible, crazy, or unusual item reminds YOU that God’s potential in your own life is limitless?!
