“I’m too old” is one of many roadblocks from Satan that can prevent us from becoming who God created us to be.

Mid-lifers may think it’s too late to fulfill God-inspired dreams. Senior adults may lament that they are too ill or too out of touch with the youth culture to have a significant impact. Those are all lies of Satan!

The fact is that EVERY AGE has its challenges.

Ask any twenty-something how frustrating it is when you need experience to get a job, and you need a job to get the experience!

Every age also has its opportunities!

The key is to be who God has created you to be, and do whatever God has created you to do! It’s never too late!

Abramwas 79 years old when God called him to leave his home country. God did not tell Abram what the destination would be. But Abram trusted that God was faithful! Sometimes Abram had his doubts, i.e. when he laughed after God promised him a son in his old age.

Moseswas 80 years old when he led Israel out of slavery in Egypt. Sometimes Moses doubted too, i.e. when he tried to dodge his calling by saying that he was not a good speaker.

C.S. Lewiswrote the three volumes of The Chronicles of Narnia when he was 50-56 years old, in 1950-1956. (https://www.cslewis.com/us/about-cs-lewis) His book series eventually became a blockbuster movie trilogy in 2005-2008.

Lois Praterpromised God when she was a teenager that she would serve Him overseas. Finally, at age 87, she moved to the Philippines and built an orphanage to rescue children from poverty and abuse.

My own life with Christgets richer and more exciting as I get older! Now, at age 53, I can’t physically do everything now that I did when I was 20 or 30! And I’ve often been confused when things didn’t go my way. But God always repurposes my gifts and passions as I age. And I firmly believe that God will never put me on the shelf!

It’s difficult to understand why some things happen to the aged.

We don’t understand when someone has a debilitating stroke or suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. I do not claim to know even a millionth of a percent of the motives of God. But this I do know. God never leaves us. And He always has purpose for us no matter what our physical or mental condition.

My own mother, Ireland Cooke, suffered a catastrophic stroke when she 84. The stroke took away her ability to walk and speak. But 7 years later, after macular degeneration took away most of her sight, she was still a wonderful witness for Jesus. Whenever anyone asked her how she kept her great sense of humor and can-do spirit, her eyes would sparkle, and her face would light up in a crooked smile, as she pointed up with her good hand to God on His throne!

Another Christian woman who had been a pianist lived in a personal care home, and she often struggled with feelings of uselessness. But one day as she played the piano, some of the other residents sang with her the hymn “What Will You Do with Jesus?” A government auditor “happened” to be there that day. He remembered this song from his childhood, and he had never given his life to Christ, but that day he accepted Jesus into his heart!

Just as God used Abram, Moses, C.S. Lewis, Lois Prater, my mother, and the woman in the personal care home,God also wants to work through you, no matter what your age!

In life, just as in football, the most important part of the game is often the last quarter!

Psalm 92:12-14 says, “The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon; planted in the house of the LORD, they will flourish in the courts of our God. They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green.”

WHETHER YOU ARE 32, 52, 82, OR 102…

YOU ARE NEVER TOO OLD FOR YOUR DIVINE CALLING! Be who you are, no matter what your age, and God will use you!

  • Reading this blog has been a pleasant reminder, and a replay on this theme and the words ,”I’m too old, R.J! “Finding out that the opposite is true with God,as you pointed out to me years ago, has added many joyful years to my life. Thank you for them. Now God seems to be setting up new “signs” in my path, some say “stop”, some say “go”, some say”no”, but I like “keep going” best! I’m looking for the “what and where” now, and seeking that personal relation in a deeper way. Thank you for the work you have put together here!

    • Thank you, Barb, for your words of encouragement. God knows exactly what to speak through you to me! God indeed does still have a “what and where” for you.” You are an inspiration to me, Barb! God bless!

  • Hi RJ thanks this is just what I needed to hear. I’m 60 years old and I feel stagnated. I’m married and it’s just my husband and I. I work and come home I go to church and that’s my only out. I feel I should be doing more with my life. I don’t have a passion for anything in particular but know I should be doing more with my life. I don’t know where to begin. I pray that God will direct my path and show me. God bless you.

    • Hello, Deborah,

I’m glad my blog encouraged you. You might be surprised to know that the absolute best time of calling is usually in the second half, or even the third quarter, of life. I prayed for you today, that you will be encouraged and gain clarity. It does seem like God is stirring your heart for some reason!

If you would like to talk for thirty minutes free on the phone, possibly to find out how my coaching might help, please feel free to do that. No pressure. I only want how God might be leading you, nothing more. Just click on the button on any page of my website for a Free Discovery Call to set up a time.

In the meantime, I have written two additional blogs about stages of life, especially about life calling after age 50. You can go to https://rjchristiancoaching.com/life-calling-valley and https://rjchristiancoaching.com/purpose50plus. God bless!

  • 53! You atre a mere babe RJ! ;). Although I could do without the physical aches that come with aging, I am loving this time of life. I know God is calling me to mentor nieces, nephews and of course, my Kidzone kids! I do need to work on leading others into the ministry so they are ready when it is time for me to step down.

I also love seeing my sons grow into young menas the are starting their careers.

Finally, my new passion, crocheting! I cannot believe the joy I am having in giving these dolls to young girls. With each doll comes prayers of blessing and protection. Also, the biblixal truth found in Psalm 139.

Whoah… I typed a lot! Sending my love to you RJ and love to Ron too!

    • Hi, Anita! Thank you so much! That really means a lot to me! I miss seeing you and talking with you too! God bless!

  • RJ, your “old” cousin in Texas likes what you are doing and what you are saying. I too remember what my Aunt Ireland was like after the stroke–quite courageous and a great witness. Keep up the good work.
